Use a short-range cast and allow the lure to settle to the desired depth. Reel in line slack, twitch the rod tip, and then take up slack again. Make sure you vary both the speed at which you reel in the slack and the depth of the lure (work the lure up and down); this method most closely resembles the natural conditions in which fish are most likely to hit. Best results will be to use a spinning rod or ice fishing rod with light line. Adding live bait to treble hooks is an excellent method, but when fish mouth the lure, always be a good line-watcher.
